Production of the 113 series SL’s began in 1963 starting with the 230, this was followed by the 250 in 1966 and the 280 in 1967. All models featured an inline six-cylinder motor with mechanical fuel injection, power steering and the choice of 4 speed manual or automatic transmission. Most models were also delivered with the trademark “Pagoda” hardtop.

 

These ever popular cars are getting hard to find and are gradually increasing in price, everybody wants a two top 280SL Pagoda with Automatic gearbox, Power steering, original RHD and in a nice colour! So that’s what we have got, this car was delivered new to Hong Kong and was bought by an Australian ex-pat in the early eighties whilst he was working there, he returned to Australia in 1989 and the car came with him, it was maintained by the Mercedes factory agent McIntosh of Mosman until 1993 when he took the car with him to Wellington New Zealand, it was again looked after by the Mercedes agent until returning to Australia again in 1995, McIntosh took over the servicing and as well as normal repairs and maintenance it received a reconditioned short motor.

 

In the late nineties the car was sold into Queensland and the maintenance was undertaken by North Star Motors of Brisbane. The current owner purchased the car in 2004 and has continued this careful ownership, it has benefitted from a retrim of seats and carpets which make it a very pleasant place to sit, it starts on the button as you would expect and drives very well with strong, smoke free engine and smooth gearbox.

 

The beauty of these cars is that they offer all the style of a Classic 1960’s sports car but the practicality of a well-fitting Softop, detachable Hardtop, Automatic Gearbox, Power Steering and Fuel injection. It really is a car to be enjoyed all year round, with timeless style, reliability and reasonable servicing costs.
